Samsung has unveiled their truly cordless earbuds – the Gear IconX. The product was announced last month, and was expected to get launched sometime in Q3. Starting today, the unique device will be available in select countries, among which South Korea will be the first.

Termed as fitness earbuds, the device is built in a way that appeals to fitness freaks, giving them a truly tangle-free experience. Here’s the official launch film from Samsung.


This device has a true cordless design, which means that there is no set of wires even to connect the two pieces together. And since it has nothing to hold it back, the earbuds have a snug fit design. This means you can do your daily activities, even jump and run, while wearing them. It also comes with splash resistance, enabled by P2i Nano Coating.

The earbuds have a bio-metric sensor inside them, which monitors your heart rate. It records your daily activities and gives updates on vital data like speed, distance, calories burnt, etc. The device syncs with S Health and lets you track your stats and check the progress through your smartphone.

It has an Ambient Mode, which lets in a balanced ambient sound. This makes sure that you are well aware of what’s happening in your surroundings.


The Gear IconX is also a dedicated music player. Measuring just 18.9×26.4×26.0 mm, this is probably the smallest music players in the market. This device lets you to store songs, which you can playback as and when you wish.


Gear IconX comes with 4 GB of storage, using which you can store up to 1000 songs. Usable memory is 3.5 GB, but the number of tracks can’t exceed 1000 regardless of the file size.


The outer casing of the earbuds are actually touch sensors. This can be used to input commands while you are using it as a standalone device or if you don’t want to pick up your phone.

Swiping gesture turns the volume up and down. Single tap acts as play/pause button. Double tap to go to next track or to answer/end calls. Triple tap to go to the previous track, while tap and hold is for reading out menu or toggling Ambient Mode.


The Gear IconX is compatible with any Android device that runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat and above, with at least 1.5 GB RAM. To transfer files, Galaxy smartphone users can transfer it from the phone itself via USB. The cable and connector are provided in the box. In case you don’t have a Galaxy smartphone, you can transfer files from PC through USB.


The earbuds can be charged by placing them in a case, which acts as a battery backup. The case can charge the earbuds on its own, and the case can be charged via USB cables. Earbuds have a 47 mAh battery in them and the case can hold 315 mAh charge.

It pairs via Bluetooth 4.1, while file transfer can be done via USB cables.

Availability and Pricing

As of now, the earbuds will be available in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, Canada, Australia and Korea. It is available in three colours – White, Blue and Black. The Gear IconX is priced at $199.
