Korean tech giant Samsung today launched their latest addition to the Note line-up, the Galaxy Note 7. They announced the launch at the Unpacked 2016 Event held at New York. Simultaneous events were held at Rio de Janeiro and London.

Build

The latest and greatest from Samsung’s stable is built very similarly to what we have seen from Samsung since 2015. Glass and metal are the materials used, with both front and back protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The design is symmetrical, which means that the subtle curves are same on the front and back, and this is the only difference. It also has IP68 certification, like the S7. Measuring 153.5 x 73.9 x 7.9mm, the smartphone weighs 169g.

Display

The Note 7 features a 2560×1440 display which measures 5.7” diagonally, giving it a pixel density of 515. The display is a dual edge panel, but with subtle curves which is different from what we have seen on Samsung’s edge devices. Samsung talked a lot about support for HDR video streaming, which is a first for a smartphone. Powerful image processing mDNIe chips are used for optimizing battery life while playing high quality content.

It also features the “Always On” functionality that debuted with the Galaxy S7 earlier this year. Combining the screen-off memo feature of Note 5 and Always On feature of S7, the Note 7 comes with a feature that shows the reminder always on the lock screen.

 Iris Scanner

The much rumoured iris scanner makes a debut too. With smart features like “Secure Folder”, this provides extra security to your personal data, just in case you don’t trust the fingerprint sensor.

Memory

Similar to previous flagships, there are two variants, one with Snapdragon 820 chipset and the other with Samsung’s own Exynos 8890. For the first time, the base variant will be having 64 GB UFS 2.0 internal memory. The Note 7 has 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and support for microSD up to 256 GB. Additionally, users will have access to free cloud storage up to 15 GB on Samsung Cloud.

Camera

The cameras are the same as the ones that came with Galaxy S7. 12 MP rear facing camera and 5 MP selfie camera, both having an aperture of f/1.7. The rear camera has the famed dual pixel technology and Optical Image Stabilization too.

Other Features

S-pen based features have been improved. The tip is just 0.7 mm thick now, and the pressure sensitivity of the display has been doubled to 4,096 levels. It acts as a translator, along with other things that it already did. And it won’t break if you insert it the wrong way.

The Note 7 will be running on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 out of the box. The device has a USB Type-C port, again something that’s a first with Samsung devices. Fast charging and wireless fast charging features are also present. Powering all these is a 3,500 mAh non user replaceable battery.

The phone will be available in stores from August 19. It’s available in Blue Coral, Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium and Black Onyx.
