Apple has just launched the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus at an event in San Francisco. The latest smartphones from Apple will be available commercially from September 16.
The announcements were not surprising, as it has become with all such smartphone launches in recent years, thanks to numerous leaks. And everything that was ‘unveiled’ at the event was already known to the public. Also, just before the actual announcement, Apple’s twitter handle reportedly leaked the specifications.
The new features of the new iPhones were announced as 10 improvements. So, let’s take a look at those in the same way.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus | The 10 Major Features
Design | Subtle Changes
Well, for the first time in Apple’s history, the iPhone’s design doesn’t have any radical changes even after the 2 year cycle. Previously, Apple introduced design changes every 2 years. But these ones looks similar to iPhone 6 and 6 Plus which launched in 2014.
The Home Button is still there, but it sits flush on the body now. It’s not clickable anymore, with a few sensors giving taptic feedback to give you the feel of an actual click. This actually helps in making the phone water-resistant, which is the third feature Apple announced
Water and dust resistance | IP67 Protection
So, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are the first water-proof phones from Apple. This is a great addition to the iPhone line-up given that major competitors have got this feature already in their flagships.
Cameras | Dual camera on 7 Plus
There are considerable improvements over the 6s in camera department. Improvements include the addition of Optical Image Stabilization, 4 True Tone LEDs and a wider f/1.8 aperture. It has a 6 element lens and also a wide gamut sensor, enabling better colour reproduction. Front camera has been bumped up to 7 MP.
Meanwhile the iPhone 7 Plus gets a dual camera setup, one wide angle 28 mm lens and a telephoto 56 mm lens which has better zooming. This gives the ability to take pictures at 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom.
All the rear cameras are 12 MP, similar to last year. Other improvements are the ability to shoot RAW images and also better image processing.
Display | Better Colours
Nothing surprising here. Similar resolution displays, but with wide display technology which was used in iPad Pro 9.7. It is also 25% brighter than previous panels.
This is again a great addition. The earpiece at the top has been developed as a full speaker, thereby giving a great stereo experience in landscape orientation.
EarPods | No more 3.5 mm audio jack
Yes, the one thing we have been hearing since almost one year. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus do not have a 3.5 mm audio jack. And this makes way for Lightning earpods, which is supposed to be better than analog ones. The Lightning port always had this ability, and the digital form of sound may be better than the good old analog one. And by the way, a lightning to 3.5 mm connector will be included in the box.
Wireless | AirPods and Beats
Apple announced a new line of audio accessory – the Airpods. These are cord-free wireless earphones, similar to the Gear IconX by Samsung, but without any stand-alone capabilities. Powered by a W1 chip inside, mics and sensors such as accelerometer, this earphone will know when you have put them in your ears. It also has the ability to output via a single piece in case you are using it to answer calls or talking to Siri.
It will have 5 hours of battery life, and the case itself acts as a battery pack thereby giving you up to 24 hours battery. The case can be charged via Lightning cable. They also announced a range of Beats wireless headphones.
Apple Pay | More Countries
Apple Pay constitutes 90 percent of all digital payments in the US as per the company. And they announced their plan to expand the services to more countries.
Performance | New A10 Fusion Chip
Well, the performance has always been a positive for iPhone and this year it even gets better. The smartphones are powered by the new A10 Fusion chip, which is a quad core processor. Two powerful cores and two energy efficient cores are used here. The powerful set are 40 percent more powerful than A9 chip and twice as much as the A8. And the energy efficient pair consumes just 20 percent of the power used by the powerful cores. Switching between these sets will be decided by the Apple Performance Controller.
A 6 core GPU will take care of the graphics, which is again 50 percent better than A9 and thrice as powerful as the A8. This GPU uses just 2/3rd of the power consumed by A9, while just half of what A8 consumed. Taking into account all these improvements, it is easy to say that it is the most powerful chip powering a smartphone in the market.
Storage, Colours, Availability & Pricing
All the memory options have been double from last year. No 16 GB iPhones this time, and an insane 256 GB option has been added.
Both the phones be available in 5 colours – Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Black and Jet Black. The jet black variant is only available in 128 GB and 256 GB storage options.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be up for pre-orders from 9 September. Both the phones will be available in more than 25 countries beginning September 16, and more countries from the following week. In India, both the phones would be available only from October 7 2016.
iPhone 7 will cost the same as the 6s, starting from $649 and the 7 Plus will start from $769. Pricing for India is not confirmed as of now.
